Last week, we identified the dangerous AI companion apps targeting our teens.

Now comes the harder part: what to do when you find these apps, and how to protect your family going forward.

This isn't just about deleting apps – it's about understanding the potential of our teens turning to AI for emotional connection and how we can help them build healthier relationships.

Create a family AI safety plan that actually works

Open dialogue, parental controls, family activities

1 hour to set up, 15 minutes daily maintenance

Prevention of dangerous emotional dependencies

Here's how:

STEP 1 - START THE CONVERSATION

PICK YOUR MOMENT:

- During dinner or car rides

- Keep it casual and natural

- Make it a normal chat, not an interrogation

TRY THESE OPENERS:

"Hey, I've been learning about these AI friend apps. What have you heard about them?"

"What do you think makes a real friendship different from an online one?"

Remember: Your goal is understanding, not criticism.

STEP 2 - SET UP SMART PROTECTION

ON THEIR PHONE:

- Turn on app download notifications

- Set up family sharing

- Enable screen time limits

IN YOUR HOME:

- No phones in bedrooms at night

- Device check-ins every Sunday

- Clear consequences for hidden apps

STEP 3 - BUILD REAL CONNECTIONS

DAILY HABITS:

- 15-minute one-on-one chats

- Phone-free family dinners

- Shared activity (even just TV time!)

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES:

- One family game night

- Weekend outdoor time

- Group activity with friends

STEP 4 - WATCH FOR WARNING SIGNS

CHECK FOR:

- Withdrawal from family

- Defensive about phone use

- Late night phone activity

TAKE ACTION:

- Talk to school counselor

- Consider family therapy

- Join local parent groups

HERE'S THE TRUTH: None of us were prepared for AI companions targeting our kids' emotions. We're the first generation of parents facing this challenge, but we don't have to face it alone.

While we can't shield our kids from every technological threat, we can:

- Stay informed

- Keep conversations open

- Take action early

- Support each other

Share with your friends and the parents of your kids' friends!

Until next time, remember: Your vigilance today protects your child's tomorrow.
