Mastering the Family Calendar: Your Key to Back-to-School Sanity!

Now that school has begun, so have the numerous activities and school events (hello Back to School Night). So this week I’m focused on another time-saving trick up our sleeve…the family calendar.

My life mantra: If it isn't on the calendar, it doesn't exist.

Dramatic? Maybe.

But as a mom of three juggling work, family, and everything in between, I've learned that my brain just can't keep up with the firehose of information coming my way.

The calendar has become my lifeline for keeping track of after school activities, birthdays, to-dos, and activities across all aspects of life.

So, how do you ensure you know what’s happening when and where? There are two parts to addressing the family calendar crisis process:

Here's how I've turned my family into calendar afficionados:

  • My husband and I both have full access to the family calendar on our phones.
  • My mom (our superhero grandma) is in on the action too.
  • Even the kids are part of this calendar crew!

Yes, you read that right.

My kids, even the youngest, know how to access and add events to the family calendar.

Be prepared for some, um, creative additions (impromptu Target runs or Sky Zone trips, anyone?), but hey, I'll take the engagement!

Get your family calendar set up and running this week!

Google Calendar (or your preferred digital calendar app)

45 minutes

Countless hours of "Did you remember...?" conversations and missed appointments!

Ready to get your family on the calendar bandwagon? Here's how:

STEP 1

Choose your calendar app (we use Google Calendar, but use what works for you).

STEP 2

Set up a shared family calendar.

STEP 3

Invite all family members to join.

STEP 4

Show each person how to access and add events.

STEP 5

Have a family meeting to establish some ground rules (like always adding location and time for events).

STEP 6

Do a test run - have everyone add their activities for the upcoming week.

STEP 7

Schedule a weekly "calendar check-in" to review and update together.

Bringing your kids and family into the fold of household management isn't just about delegation—it's about creating a team that supports each other.

When we share the load, we lighten the mental burden that comes from being the sole keeper of all things family.

It's amazing how much smoother life runs when everyone has a stake in keeping our ship afloat.

But we're not stopping there! Now that we've got our human crew on board, it's time to leverage technology to take us to the next level.

This Friday, keep an eye out for a special edition where I'll show you how to wrangle those pesky school apps, work calendars, and paper schedules into one beautiful, cohesive system.

Trust me, it's a game-changer you won't want to miss!

See ya next week!
